Current and future trends

Imagine if you could go on a Geography fieldtrip into space. If you could, this is what you would see at night.

The satellite images shows Australia from above at night. The distribution of light spots is denser along the east coast with very light areas corresponding to the coastal location of the major metropolitan centres, including the south and southwest. Smaller bright spots occur in the north and the centre of the country.

This image of Australia at night is made from thousands of satellite photos that have been stitched together.

A fieldtrip into space would be useful to see where people live in Australia. The human-made lights in the image above show the more heavily populated areas of Australia’s land surface.

Travel into space is not far from becoming a reality for tourists in the near future. Find out why

Complete the flow map to see the trends in population movement.

What does the flow map reveal about population movement? Interpreting the flow map (134 kB doc)

Flow maps showing population movements such as interstate migration reveal general trends but not the specific places where people are moving to. For that we need to zoom in to a more local scale. One way to follow the trends in demographic change is to map the location of new schools.

Think about the reasons for the trends in population movement by answering these questions. (91 kB doc)
